Make a Bird Feeder to Bring in the Birds

The best way to attract birds to your garden is to build them a bird feeder. Make your outdoor space similar to their natural home; plant thickets of tall trees, shrubby bushes, and grasses. Dense shrubs are used by small birds to rest and nest. Plants with berries, flowers, nectar or seed that birds like to eat can be introduced as a food source. Provide water in a shallow pond or birdbath. If you have a cat as pet make sure that it has a bell on its collar to give the birds a little warning.

You will need:

• A saucer-shaped clay pot or plastic bowl

• Bird seed

• 3 pieces of rope, each 3 feet (1 m) long

• A wire hoop

What To Do

Fill the pot or bowl with seed. (If you are using a pot, cover any drainage hole before adding the seed.) Knot the 3 pieces of rope together in the middle. Tie the 6 ends of rope together and insert a wire hoop. Place the pot or bowl in the bottom of the rope loop and hand it up in a tree that can be viewed easily from a window in your home. Fill with bird seed and enjoy the show.
