Herb Crafts for Children, Drying Herbs and Potpourri

Herb Crafts

Herbs can be used fresh for cooking. However for our craft activities, dry them first. Make lavender bags to scent your closet, or dresser drawers, or place potpourri in a bowl to add a fresh aroma to any room. For a relaxing nights sleep try making a pillow.

Drying

You Will Need:

• Herbs picked from garden • String • A drying rack • A well ventilated room

What To Do:

To dry plants for your crafts, pick stems with foliage early in the morning before the sun has reached the leaves. Tie in bunches with string. Hang upside down on a drying rack in an airy, well ventilated room. (You can also do this with flowers to add some color and variety to your handmade potpourri.

Potpourri

You can add some of the plants you’ve grown to your homemade potpourri. The flowers and leaves of your herbs should be dried first before being used in potpourri. (Fragrant seeds and dried flowers can also be an interesting addition.) Here are some suggestions for leaves, flowers, and seeds that are ideal for use in potpourri:

• Leaves: rosemary, mint (peppermint), marjoram, thyme, sage • Flowers: lavender, violet • Seeds: caraway, angelica, coriander.

For an easy craft you can do with your children, sew pretty bags and fill them with dried mint, then tie them up with ribbon and give as gifts. Or make as small pillow sachet filled with dried lavender.
