Handmade Gift Ideas for the Holiday Season
As winter nears, and the holiday season approaches, I start to think about hibernating for the winter; wrapping up in front of the fireplace with a warm blanket and a good book. As a child and then a young adult, my favorite books were the Little House on the Prairie Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I always use to say that I was born a hundred years too late and that I would have fit right in travelling cross country in a covered wagon to stake out a homestead in the Midwest.
This part of my personality along with other personal beliefs has led to my interest in handmade crafts and what has resulted in changes to many habits lately to try and embrace a more natural, earth friendly way of living.
I think the current direction the economy is taking (Fall 2008) along with a desire to leave a healthy planet for future generations has made many of us take a look at what we use, what we can reuse, what we can make rather than buy, and what we can make due without altogether.
Learning to make handmade crafts allows us to buy ingredients in bulk, and save money on packaging and processing. Making handmade crafts and sharing that knowledge with our children creates memories, allows us to bond with them and teaches our children sustainable living practices that will last them a lifetime and can be handed down from generation to generation.
One story I always remember from the Little House Series, especially around this time of year, is when Mr. Edwards walks through a blizzard to get to the Ingalls’ in time for Christmas. The gifts given and received at their Holiday celebration were practical, a pair of mittens, a scarf, some sugar.

Promote Your Page TooEvery year as the holiday season approaches, I vow to not go overboard with the gift giving. To give practical gifts, to stop buying things for myself months before the holiday season approaches and instead make a Christmas list for myself and my family that is made up of items we actually need, would appreciate getting, and could use.
This year I am going to make it happen and I hope you do to. So, here are some handmade gift ideas you and your children can make for the holidays, that won’t cost you a fortune, will be fun to make, will give your holiday gifts a personal touch, and that your friends and family will actually use.
I hope you enjoy making, giving and if your lucky, receiving, handmade gifts this holiday season.
